Coming to the gym for the first time or returning after a hiatus can elicit a ton of emotions, from excitement to nervousness. Even as a seasoned personal trainer, I get anxious if I walk into a gym I’m not familiar with. It’s an extremely common experience.
In order to not let that stop you from moving your body and allowing yourself to do something that feels good, I’d like to offer some considerations to get you past that nervousness! I will use this article to address the three most common gym concerns I hear as a trainer and help you create a strategy that gets you feeling safer in the gym and working towards your wellness goals.
Safety Concerns For many women, queer, and trans people, questioning your physical, mental, and emotional safety in the gym is an unfortunate reality. Don’t ever feel like you have to “push through” your gut reaction to a space. Your safety and comfort always come first. Researching a gym’s website beforehand, checking online reviews, touring in-person,
doing a trial, and assessing their commitment to inclusivity can provide peace of mind and help you find a supportive space. At places like Chin-Up Training, we prioritize creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone, especially those who have felt marginalized in traditional wellness spaces.

Fear of Being Judged I remember very well what it was like to be a beginner. Especially if it’s your first time in the gym, or you’re just starting on your workout journey, worrying about judgment from others can be a huge barrier to entry. Try searching for a beginner-friendly gym in your area. Using local Facebook groups to find a gym buddy to go with may help break through this barrier. Or ask at the gym you’re interested in if they have a way to meet new people, such as their own meetups.

If something like that isn’t an option, perhaps try a gym that has classes. Someone taught me how to lift weights and use equipment, and now that is the same way that I teach people. Learning in a group setting will teach you proper technique, help you meet others, and give you accountability to show up more often than not! Understand that building confidence in the gym is a gradual process. It is okay to take your time to find your groove in a new environment. Remember, nobody was born knowing how to work out! Uncertainty About What To Do

Uncertainty about what exercises to do or how to use equipment is overwhelming. Therefore, having a plan or a program to follow in the gym is essential. To this day, I still write out all of the exercises I’m going to do in my workout beforehand.
If you aren’t sure how to do the movements correctly yet, many fitness classes are typically designed so anyone at any level can join. The instructors are trained to work with every ability level, and they will be able to safely guide you through the movements you haven’t done before.
Additionally, the right class will provide a sense of community, instruction from an experienced professional who is trained in writing safe programs for all levels.
Your gym journey is about building your confidence, learning techniques safely, and enjoying the benefits of physical activity. Whether you're lifting weights, attending a yoga class, or trying out new equipment, each step you take brings you closer to your wellness goals.
You deserve to feel safe, welcomed, and empowered in your fitness journey. Finding a gym that aligns with your values and supports your growth is paramount. Don’t be afraid to shop around.
